Guests arrive at the inn via Avenue of the Live Oaks, a beautiful road shaded by majestic, 250-year-old, moss-draped oaks. Rice fields, marshes, and ponds dot the lush landscape. At the end of the road is an all-white antebellum mansion, built in the 1750s. Evening cordials and cocktails are served in the nearby Carriage House.
One former owner of the mansion was Dr. Henry Massingberd Tucker (1831-1904). When he returned from late-night calls, Tucker would ring the bell at the front gate, deposit his horses at the carriage house, then head to the mansion. Some say he can still be seen late at night, walking from the carriage house to his room.
