This is a new national park opened only a few years ago. Ten thousand years ago this entire area was still covered by ice and the glacial retreat showed the landscape together with the vegetation and animal life. The valley of Jostedalen shows magnificient scenery which was carved and shaped mainly by glacier erosion, forming valleys, hanging valleys and mountain passes. The main valley here is Jostedalen. This valley now is surrounded by two national parks, the Jostedalbreen and the Breheimen. The glacier and the park get their name from this long valley.
The national park opens on May 1st and remains open every day fom 7.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. and the approach road also opens for the season. There are several ways of geting there. You can go by road from Bergen passing Sogndal and Jostedalen. Or you can take the Vikafjell mountain road, the Sojnefjord road and the new road with the world’s longest tunnel. You can travel by train which will include a long ferry trip and a bus trip. The boat option from Bergen is an express boat.
You will see an extensive variety of vegetation and animals. The area presents many species of wild life from large to small animals. The brown bear is here, the red deer, the fox, the hare and the squirrel. There are different species of freshwater fish, mainly trout, and many insects and plancton.
Among the many species of trees you will find alder, birch, and pine. There are bushes, heathers, flowers, plants and mosses.
There are native birds that stay there all the time and other that come from the too hot climates in the equatorial area to nest there. Water birds are in abundance.
You can go kayaking here or do some icerolling or boating, hiking, glacier hiking, mountain climbing, mountain hiking, rafting under well trained guides for all your adventures. You can get close to the ice and paddle your canoe among the icebergs.
You can accompany the scientists studying in the area and learn about all the different developments throughout the ages. You can do your camping here too. And for the children there is plenty to do.There is a climbing room provide for them and they are under supervision at all times. You can visit the museum or visit some of the art shops or buy your souvenirs such as postcards, pens, sweaters, T-shirts, jackets, caps. goggles, sunglasses and watches. And the internet facilities are free.
